In the early 2000s, quantum dots (QDs) lighting devices were first fabricated in the form of surface-mount-technology (SMT) light emitting diodes (LEDs) and delivered to backlights of LCD displays in order to improve their luminescence efficiency and colour quality in ITRI in Taiwan. Nowadays, they are being considered a promising solution for next-generation displays with rec. BT.2020 standards in display industry. Various application types of QDs in displays are under development, such as QD film, QD LEDs, QD photoresist or color filters, and QD electroluminescence devices, in which the QD film type has been first commercialized by the main TV manufactures. In this talk, current challenges of QDs, including colour quality, emission efficiency and thermal stability, in different application forms will be evaluated and reported.
