Dr. Zhiyong Gu is currently a Full Professor and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2004 in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. From 2004 to 2006, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. In September 2006, he joined the University of Massachusetts Lowell as an Assistant Professor, where he is also affiliated with the Nanomanufacturing Center. In September 2012, he was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure, and in September 2017, he was promoted to Full Professor. His research interests include synthesis of nanoparticles and nanowires, lead-free nanosolders, self-assembly, block copolymers, nanocomposite materials, and nanoscale joining and integration for electronics, sensors and biomedical applications. He has published 5 book chapters and over 60 peer-reviewed journal papers, and contributed to over 170 presentations in national and international conferences. He has given over 60 invited talks and seminars in universities, R&D centers, and conferences. He received the 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award in 2010, Department Teaching Excellence Award in 2011, and the US EPA People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Award in 2015. He has been a reviewer for over 70 different journals and served as a panelist or reviewer for various government funding agencies including National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and Louisiana Board of Regents. He is currently an Associate Editor for Journal of Nanoparticle Research and Journal of Electronic Materials, and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for several other journals.
摘要:
Nanowires are one of the most promising nano-building blocks for a variety of applications, including nano-interconnection, self-assembly, sensors/biosensors, solar cells, and nanoelectronics and nanodevice integration. In this presentation, I will show the synthesis and fabrication of multisegmented nanowires using a template-based electrodeposition method. These nanowires, with the diameter of 15-200 nm and length up 20 µm, are then characterized by SEM, TEM, EDAX, XRD, and electron diffraction. In my research group, several potential applications have been exploited by these nanowires: (1) lead-free nanosolders have been successfully synthesized and are applied for nanowire assembly and nano-joint formation, which has great implications for nanoelectronics assembly and packaging applications; (2) doped tin oxide nanowires have been synthesized and are applied for sensor applications, which showed promise in detecting a variety of gas/vapor analytes at low concentrations; (3) surface roughed platinum (Pt) nanowires, which was fabricated by controlling the electrodeposition current, have shown promise in high sensitivity electrochemical detection. These nanowires and self-assembling techniques show great potential in the integration of functional nanoelectronics and nanosensors.
